Improving Network Reliability and Performance

A leading Tier-1 Telecom service provider deployed SiMPLuS Operations to improve the overall reliability and performance of its IP/MPLS network. This service provider has a Pan-India backbone network with more than 100 routers and switches connecting multiple wireless circles. The network is used to transport domestic and international voice traffic and signaling across multiple locations, as well as for 3G traffic distribution. Because the backbone delivers multiple revenue-generating services, its operations are of utmost priority for the service provider.

Before deploying SiMPLuS, the service provider experienced frequent major and minor network outages. Further, unanticipated congestion often led to degraded network performance. The complexity of a single IP/MPLS infrastructure delivering multiple services made it very time-consuming for technical staff to resolve these issues. This led to lost revenues from call drops and blocks.

When they deployed SiMPLuS Operations, the service provider's network management teams gained deep, real-time visibility into their IP/MPLS network. In addition, they were able to understand the interplay between individual services and the overall network. This visibility enabled the teams to proactively identify and resolve network problems, reducing the number of network outages.

When a network outage does occur, SiMPLuS' extensive fault management and event correlation capabilities have significantly reduced the time to isolate the root cause. This has resulted in a significant reduction of overall network outage time.

Finally, the NOC team has used SiMPLuS traffic monitoring to quickly identify unusual network behavior and to reduce congestion in the network. This has enabled the service provider to improve service performance as well as avoid unnecessary capital spending.

Centralized Command and Control

A leading multi-national telecom service provider offering enterprise services chose SiMPLuS CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) as its service delivery platform. The operational deployment manages thousands of CPEs located across India.

The service provider has deployed multiple different models of CPE devices from multiple vendors. Before SiMPLuS, this required them to use multiple tools to manage inventory, configuration, fault, performance and security. This increased the time and staff expertise required to provision and deliver services. It was especially challenging to resolve faults and performance that spanned multiple devices, increasing network downtime.

The CPE management solution from Vegayan's SiMPLuS suite provided extensive network operation and management capability for managing customer edge (CPE) routers, switches and their network interfaces. It automatically discovered all the physical and logical interfaces internal to the network as well as the customer facing edges for delivering services. It also included network settings, configurations and dynamic status updates of these network entities. The solution provided full FCAPS capability for element management through SiMPLuS Operations solution.

The solution provided full control over the CPE network elements and its services through its centralized server and multiple concurrent clients. The clients allowed service provider operations teams to handle different aspects of network management simultaneously. The server interfaced directly with the network to gather dynamic network information and provide extensive operational capabilities for configuration, fault and performance management of CPE devices.

Network Optimization and Failure Resiliency

A service provider implemented SiMPLuS Planning to design a green-field converged network that could deliver a wide range of services to enterprise and retail customers. The converged network needed to enable voice, data (2G & 3G), broadband as well as other enterprise services. The key design goals were to ensure a high degree of reliability and performance while controlling capital expenditures.

The service provider started by creating a high level design using SiMPLuS' intuitive, template-based capabilities. They then added forecasted traffic flows to the design and used SiMPLuS to simulate network performance. SiMPLuS identified potential bottlenecks and the users experimented with multiple options for upgrading equipment and reconfiguring paths to address the bottlenecks. By iterating in this fashion, the service provider created a network design that could effectively deliver the required services.

Next, the service provider needed to ensure network reliability by providing a high level of resiliency to likely failures. Using SiMPLuS, they simulated single-cut, double-cut and SRG failures to determine their impact on availability and performance of network services. The design teams used this information to optimize failover paths and add additional links and capacity to protect against the most critical failures and enable high availability of revenue-generating services.

Before they deployed SiMPLuS, the service provider estimated that this design process would require 3-4 months. Using SiMPLuS' capabilities, the teams were able to accomplish it in 2 weeks. Further, the team achieved a high level of confidence that the design would meet the availability and performance requirements without wasteful over-provisioning of network capacity.

Enhanced Real-Time Control of Enterprise Network

A leading manufacturing company deployed SiMPLuS Operations on its enterprise-wide IP network that connects corporate headquarters and multiple manufacturing plants and distribution centres. The network incorporates hundred routers and switches connected through leased lines from multiple-service providers. Critical locations also have backup links using DSL, ISDN or VSAT connections. The network is used for mission-critical ERP/SCM applications and corporate communications (email, audio/video conferencing, etc).

Before deploying SiMPLuS, the company frequently experienced network faults that would bring ERP applications to a complete standstill and result in heavy revenue loss. Resolution times were lengthy because the company lacked the ability to isolate faults and determine if they lay on their own network or with a service provider. Although the company had deployed backup links, they did not have the network visibility necessary to enable timely switchover.

SiMPLuS Operations provides the customer with real-time deep visibility into its enterprise-wide network. The software instantly detects network faults and automatically isolates the device or network link that is causing the issue. This has enabled the customer to quickly resolve its own network issues as well as work more effectively with its service providers. Further, the customer has used SiMPLuS' performance monitoring to identify link congestions that resulted in slow ERP performance.

Using SiMPLuS, the customer was able to implement network configuration changes that automated the switch-over from primary to backup links. SiMPLuS automatically captures these switchovers and enables the customer to quickly resolve the primary link issue.
